Why Not Just Use a Flow Meter in the Pipe

Many engineers ask us this. A full-bore electromagnetic or ultrasonic flow meter needs a flooded pipe. Wastewater lines are often gravity-fed and run at 30-70% fill. A flume creates a controlled upstream level that corresponds precisely to flow rate. There is no need for a closed conduit. This also eliminates problems with debris catching on electrodes or ultrasonic transducers fouling in a half-empty pipe.

We have supplied flume-compatible ultrasonic transmitters to a palm oil effluent pond in Indonesia where the channel was 1.2 meters wide and flowed only 150 mm deep. Installation constraints. Can you insert a pre-fabricated stainless or GRP flume, or do you need to cast in place?

Materials That Actually Last

Most flumes we deliver are glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) or 304/316 stainless steel. GRP is lightweight, corrosion-proof, and half the cost of stainless. How the Measurement Chain Works

The flume is only the primary element. On top you mount an ultrasonic level transmitter, typically a Silver Instruments model SUL-300. It fires a sound pulse down to the water surface and measures time of flight. The transmitter converts level to flow using a stored flume curve table. You get instant flow rate and totalized volume. Accuracy is ±1 to 2% of actual flow once the system is commissioned with the correct flume dimensions entered.

In plants that already have SCADA, the SUL-300 outputs Modbus RS485. For local indication we add a paperless recorder that logs flow, level, and temperature. Installation Notes Most Miss

Approach channel straight run matters. The flow must enter the flume evenly, without swirl or surface waves. A rule of thumb is 10-15 times the throat width upstream of the flume must be straight and free of bends or drops. If you ignore this, the level-to-flow relationship breaks and the readings scatter by 5-10%.

Never let the flume submerge. Submergence is when downstream water backs up into the flume throat and changes the upstream level without changing flow. That introduces large errors. We always check the downstream channel grade and provide a free discharge analysis before quoting. If submergence is unavoidable, a dual-sensor configuration with one level sensor upstream and one in the throat can correct the measurement, but that adds cost.

Mount the ultrasonic sensor exactly at the specified location marked on the flume. Even 50 mm offset changes the reading. Use a rigid mounting bracket, not a wobbly piece of unistrut.

Real Client Scenario: Vietnam Seafood Processing

Last year a shrimp processing factory in Can Tho needed to measure wastewater flow before their DAF unit. The channel was rectangular concrete, 600 mm wide, with flow between 20 and 180 m³/h. Can I use a flume flow meter on raw sewage with rags and wipes?
Yes. A Parshall or Palmer-Bowlus flume with a properly located ultrasonic sensor has no submersed parts to foul. Solids pass through the throat. Just ensure the level transmitter beam does not hit a floating mat. A sloped stilling well can help.

What accuracy can I expect?
With a correctly sized and installed flume, total system accuracy is ±2% of actual flow over a 10:1 turndown. If you need custody transfer levels, add a redundant level sensor and flow computer.
